AICEM and Young Brent Foundation are hosting a national training course on human rights
education in London in October 2024 called Human Rights Passwords organised in cooperation with
the Youth Department of the Council of Europe within the Youth revitalising democracy project.
The training Human Rights Passwords offers young people the opportunity to deepen their
understanding of human rights and human rights education through practical non-formal
education 4 day course. It is organised in the framework of the celebrations of the 75th
anniversary of the Council of Europe within the Youth revitalising democracy project under the
support of the London Borough of Brent.
The event seeks to renew further and strengthen the close relationship between the Council of
Europe’s mission and the current and future generations of young people. It is organised for
young people to share their aspirations and commitment to a democratic Europe and to
contribute, as irreplaceable partners for the present and the future of the Council of Europe, to
shaping the future of democracy and human rights on the European continent.
The contribution of the work delivered in their local community ensures that a culture of human
rights is passed from one individual to another.
The training will develop ideas and proposals for strengthening democracy based on the
values and principles of the Council of Europe, which is part of the common heritage of all
people living in Europe.
This training course aims to:
● Promote human rights (HR) among young people (18 – 35) living in the UK and their
role as citizens to contrast discrimination based on background and heritage. Explore
ways young people can use both offline and online tools to exercise and defend
democratic rights and use them to engage and influence political decisions related to
Human Rights (HR) and Human Rights Education (HRE).
● Empower youth workers and actors working with youth, particularly young migrants,
refugees, and asylum seekers, with tools and methodologies on HRE to support
participants in implementing concrete actions through their organisations, implementing
new projects, and positively influencing local authorities on the importance of HRE.
● Participants will also have the opportunity to share their aspirations and proposals at the
official celebration/exhibition of the 75th anniversary, which will be held in the London
Borough of Brent and will host several local, national, and international representatives.
Objectives of the event
- To strengthen participants’ understanding of key concepts of human rights and human
rights education and their ability to put them into practice with young people in a
diverse society, including relevant mechanisms and instruments (charters,
declarations, conventions). - To develop essential competencies, skills and attitudes to act as multipliers and
advocates working with human rights education in non-formal learning settings;
including familiarising participants with the approaches of Compass manual. - To raise awareness about the online and offline forms of phobias related to the recent
UK “Illegal Immigrant Act”. Giving concrete tools local organisations can use to
promote HR and intercultural and interfaith dialogue. - To develop a skill set to protect and promote our cultural, social-economical rights
Profile of participants
The youth event is primarily designed to bring together participants who are either:
a) representatives of a local, regional, national youth council or national organisation of a
similar scope
b) members/ Alumni of the Brent Youth Parliament and other youth parliament
c) representatives of youth organisations,
d) Young activists, facilitators and leaders active in human rights and democracy
projects or campaigns or education
e) UK youth delegates to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.
Participants must:
- be in a position to multiply and follow up on the conclusions of the training
- be a resident or inhabitant of the United Kingdom
- be aged between 18-35 years (exception can be made if explained)
- be able to work autonomously in English (if sign language or additional interpretation is
required, please get in touch with the organisers before applying) - be available for the entire duration of the training
